The leading institution for the historical and archaeological heritage of the Neamț area. The main exhibition traces how human communities in the region developed, alongside the coin collection, temporary exhibition spaces and a virtual tour.
Local museum work began in the first quarter of the 20th century. In 1934, at the initiative of the priest Constantin Matasă, an archaeological museum devoted to local finds took shape. Since 1980 the museum has been housed in the historic building at 10 Mihai Eminescu Street.

The permanent exhibition shows how human communities in the Neamț area evolved, from prehistory to modern times. It was last reorganised in 2007–2008, with the reopening scheduled for 15 May 2025.
