The natural treasure of the Hășmaș Mountains
Set at the foot of Hășmașul Mare, at an altitude of almost 1,000 metres, Red Lake is one of the most spectacular natural lakes in Romania. It was formed by a landslide in 1838 and is surrounded by conifer forests and towering cliffs, serving as the gateway to Bicaz Gorge.
A place where nature, legend and quiet come together in a living picture of the Eastern Carpathians.

The largest natural dam lake in the country, covering almost 12 hectares. Petrified fir trunks rise out of the water, silent witnesses of the forest swallowed up nearly two centuries ago.
Its name comes from the reddish water, coloured by iron oxides in the soil, and from the legend of a whole village said to have been swallowed by the mountain.
In Hungarian it is known as Gyilkos-tó (“Killer Lake”), a name that keeps alive the dramatic story of how it was formed.
Glide between the submerged tree trunks and enjoy the scenery from a unique angle. It is a calming and slightly surreal experience.
Trails lead to Bicaz Gorge, Poiana Ghilcoș, Altar Rock or Suhardul Mic. There is something for every fitness level, from gentle walks to more demanding hikes.
In the morning, when the mist lifts off the surface of the lake, is the perfect time for spectacular photos. The light plays beautifully among the trunks.
