Neamț Citadel

Neamț Citadel

The fortress on the rock

High above Târgu Neamț, on a rocky ridge, Neamț Citadel has watched over the Ozana valley for more than six centuries. Built at the end of the 14th century and strengthened by Stephen the Great with taller walls, bastions and a deep defensive moat, the fortress turned back invaders time and again.

Legends were born here — from "The Mother of Stephen the Great" to the famous stand of the local mountain guards against Sobieski.

What you'll see today

The citadel has been restored and is open to visitors. You cross the bridge resting on 11 stone pillars, walk in under the Gothic gate and discover the inner courtyard, the chapel, the armoury, the dungeon and rooms furnished as they once were.

The bonus? A breathtaking view over the Ozana, the river Creangă called "the beautifully flowing one", and the Neamț mountains.
